Self-Check Quiz

Fifteen questions on the core skills of Lessons 1–8: moments of inertia of particles and standard bodies, the parallel-axis theorem, composite bodies, products of inertia, the inertia tensor and principal axes. Submit to see your score and a worked solution for every question.

Before you start

How it works

  • Work on your own with a calculator and scrap paper. Try it without notes first: that shows you what you really know.
  • Nothing is marked until you press Submit quiz. Until then you can move between questions and change any answer.
  • Each question is either right or wrong. When a question has several boxes, every box must be right.
  • After you submit, you see your score, a review of every question with a worked solution, and a results sheet you can print or save as a PDF.
  • Products of inertia use the lessons' definition, \(I_{xy} = \int xy\,dm\); in the inertia tensor they appear with a minus sign.

Typing answers

How to type common answers
To enterType
\(\tfrac25(3)(0.1)^2\)2/5*3*0.1^2
\(\tfrac1{12}(2)(1.2^2)\)2*1.2^2/12
\(\sqrt{0.595/4.5}\)sqrt(0.595/4.5)
\(\pi(0.1)^2\)pi*0.1^2
\(-0.02\)-0.02

Each box shows how it read your entry (for example = 0.012), so you can check it before you submit. Type only the number; the unit is shown next to the box.
